I don't understand why some companies can't do like LucasArts and just tell people to back up their games! LEC has never, ever, placed a physical copy protection on a disc (in Europe, at least), and always recommended that original discs never be used for anything else than taking a backup from which to install and play the game. A virtual CD-ROM does not need to spin down in order to verify errors, thus eliminating the most noticable delay. There's also a slight delay then as the protection-wrapper decrypts and unwraps the executable to a temp file and runs it.

Comparing load times on a simple SafeDisc-encrypted title will easily reveal a slowdown by at least 15 seconds as the reader must first spin down as it encounters an error, then verify a large area of errors using <1X speed, then spinning up again to normal read speed to load the actual game. Since CD-protections require the CD not to follow Philips' standards, any standards-compliant CD-ROM will slow down to <1X in order to be able to verify the intentional errors induced by protection mastering. Then there's the issue of the actual CD-check slowing down things to a crawl. CDs are just damn slow, the spin up time alone is more than I'm willing to deal with. Dio, you are quite right about Morrowind load time pre and post replacement but it really applies to all games.
